Here’s why training your nervous system is just as important as building those abs!
I see so many people committing religiously to their workout routines—getting their cardio in, lifting weights, and focusing on building muscle. And for good reason: they’re health-conscious and understand that movement is essential for staying strong, especially as we age.
But there’s one critical piece that often gets overlooked: the profound impact of our breath and nervous system on overall well-being.
If you have dysfunctional breathing patterns (you’d be surprised how many fast runners I see breathing exclusively through their mouths!) or if you’re exercising while running on chronic stress, you might actually be doing yourself a disservice. For example, long-distance runs might feel like an outlet, but they’re not necessarily helping you build resilience in your nervous system.
That’s why it’s crucial to integrate these two key elements into your daily life:
1. Awareness: Tune into your breath and nervous system state—are you stressed or relaxed?
2. Practices: Build routines that support your nervous system, improve resilience, and create lasting changes in your stress levels.
If this resonates with you (yes, I’m looking at you, runners and HIIT enthusiasts!), it might be time to add practices that sustainably lower stress and build resilience.
